Privacy
This page explains what happens to the details you give us when you sign up to camData, and what happens when you visit this website. Last updated 10 October 2026. If we change it, we will update this page and the date above.
Who we are
camData, the Cambridge Data Science Society, is a student society run by a volunteer committee. The society is responsible for your details (it is the "data controller"). You can reach us at committee@camdata.org about anything on this page.
Anyone can join our mailing list. Membership of the society itself is for students of the University of Cambridge.
What we collect
When you sign up on camdata.org/join we ask for:
- your name and email address
- optionally, your phone number
Why
- Your email is used to tell you about camData events and news. We only do this because you ticked the box asking us to.
- Your phone number, if you give it, lets us contact you and manage our WhatsApp community. Leave it out and you'll still get our emails.
We don't sell your details, share them with sponsors, or use them for anything other than the above.
Who can see it
Only the camData committee. Your details are stored in a database run by our web host, Cloudflare, and in a spreadsheet in the committee's Google Drive, which we use to run our mailing list. Both keep them for us and don't use them for anything else.
How long we keep it
We keep your details until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them.
This website
This website doesn't use cookies, analytics or tracking, and doesn't load anything from other companies. The signup form sends your details straight to our own database, with no form service in between. Our host, Cloudflare, briefly logs visitors' IP addresses to keep the site secure and working, as all web hosts do. Links to other sites, such as GitHub and LinkedIn, are covered by those sites' own policies.
Our WhatsApp community
Joining our WhatsApp community is up to you, and WhatsApp's own privacy policy applies there. In the announcements group, other members can't see your phone number, except people who already have it saved in their contacts; the committee, as admins, can. If you join other groups inside the community, members of those groups can see your number.
Your choices
- Unsubscribe at any time by replying to any of our emails, or by emailing us.
- See, correct or delete what we hold about you, get a copy of it, or object to how we use it, by emailing committee@camdata.org. We'll reply within a month.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, please tell us first. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
